The topic of my final project will be the same as the one from project 4 - how technology is affecting us. While the previous piece focused on an abstract idea behind the theme, this time I want to tackle it in a less abstract way. Does this look familiar?
We use our smartphones on daily basis, post painstakingly curated content on social media. This content is supposed to portray who we are, but because we choose what gets shared, it shows an idealized picture of us. On the other hand we don't what is someone passionate about when we pass someone on the street, while we can see it pretty easily from their social media feed. I want to focus on this disconnect between the virtual and meatspace you. We only see a part of who someone is.
For my final project, I want to take pictures of people on their phones (might just be a single person if I am really struggling for time) and "dissolve" them into more digital and a bit more abstracted representations. I am also toying with idea of superimposing some social media messages (kinda like that, but with more random facebook/twitter style posts instead of texts) to, at least on some level, bridge the gap between digital and IRL you. In a perfect world, I would like to make a series out of it.
I'll be using Photoshop and Processing (thanks to the influence and help of a great artist and creative coder - Jerome Herr) for this project. If I manage to make a series, I think a cool idea would be to display them in home photo frames (now thinking about it, it wont probably work for the idea I have now - a full figure against white background, but I might change it to "everyday" style photos and display them that way).
Very cool might be interest in making the human body pixelate in to an animated version of the person that they wish they could be. I know a lot of people that use the web as a way of using getting away and living a fantasy. Might be cool to take the idea of how long we look down at a fake world and not really live in the real world.
ReplyDeleteI love this idea of the contrast between the way we present ourselves on social media and how we really are, and the way that these types of websites affect us. It's something I'm definitely very interested in.
ReplyDeleteI recently did a project on "Facebook depression." Its basically just that when we see the idealized version of everyone's lives that they are portraying and feel like we are inferior or that we don't measure up, it can be pretty detrimental to our mental health and in certain cases can lead to the development of depressive symptoms. I think it would be interesting if you played up this mental health piece of your concept somehow. This idea might be kind of besides the point to what you are really focusing on, but to me it seemed like it was related.
Either way, I'm excited to see what you end up with!
I really like this idea! I think you could do a lot with this to show the way that we spend time together, but are really isolated. Love the concept! Can't wait to see how it turns out
ReplyDeleteIt would be cool to split people into how they want to be seen and how they truly are. Social media and the internet plays a huge role in all of our lives everyday and it's really cool that you're showing how it affects us.
ReplyDeleteThis is an awesome idea! I love the concept. I'm excited to see your final product if it's anything like last project. I agree with the idea of splitting people, super cool
ReplyDeleteCool idea! I like the splitting idea above. I don't think anyone's life is as cool as their instagram or whatever makes them out to be. I love that you're exploring that area between the two.
ReplyDeleteThe dissolving concept is great. You should check out Guido Lafigliola, if you haven't already.

Love it! Your projects always blow my mind and I can't wait to have it blown again. I think you handle abstraction pretty well so I have no doubts with you concept.
ReplyDeleteI'm really excited to see what you come up with. I'd be sure to make your idea really visible in this piece because it could potentially get lost in the work.
ReplyDeleteThat is a very intriguing idea! I know it will come out great considering seeing a proof of project 4 and how well you were able the pixelate an image. I like the idea of setting different individuals in everyday settings. To further that idea, you could place them in what-should-be social situations such as at a dinner table or a party. This could elaborate on how people are still buried in their virtual persona which pulls them away from those they should be spending time and attention to. Just a thought.
