After trying to add more to the piece, I have decided to just leave it as is. Adding extra things on the road and/or in the background made it much more distracting and cluttered. The piece right now feels quite still (as in non-dynamic), which works quite well for my underlying idea: the world has ended, but life goes on. This stillness also goes hand-in-hand with the idea of nature. From a human perspective nature feels very still. Trees or plants don't grow in front of our eyes, it takes time. I think this piece does a decent job at communicating it. The two-tone sky is supposed to reinforce this. A storm (change?) is coming, but it still has a long way to go to take place.
In this piece I set out to make something convincingly realistic. I don't feel I am very good at representative art, especially when it comes to non-digital media, so I usually take a more abstract route. I have spent most of my time on trying to make the hand look both as an actual hand and a plant. I have to say, I am positively surprised that I managed to pull this off.
In the end, I used only a handful (no pun intended) of photos from the ones I took. My hand and then some bark and moss for textures. The road picture, was taken by a photographer friend back in Poland and both the sky and the skyline are royalty-free stock photos. The cracks were made using a random cracked earth texture. All in all, I am quite happy with this piece.
